General information about Argentina

Area: 2,780,400 square km Population: 35,220,000 (official estimate 96')
Capital City: Buenos Aires. The complete name is "Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires". You will find "Capital Federal", this also refers to capital city.
Language: Spanish.
Some webpages say that English is widely spoken, this is not really the case. You won't find anybody speaking English in many places but in main hotels in turistic places.
Religion: Official: Roman Catholic. Small communities of Muslims, Protestants and Jewish.
Time: GMT - 3
Geography: Argentina is situated in South America, east of the Andes. Bordered by Chile to the West, the Atlantic Ocean to the East and Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil to the North.
Electricity: 220 Volt AC. Lightbulbs have screw fitting. Wall electrical sockets in older buildings are of the 2-pin round type, but some new buildings use 3-pin flat type.
Telephone system: Country code: 54 / Outgoing international code is 00.There are plenty of Public phones in big cities which are located in shops, restaurantes and "locutorios". Also on the sidewalks.
Faxes: Most Hotels will have one. Most "locutorios" will have one too.

Tipping
Tips are in cash. Don't add it to the bill when you use your credit card.
Restaurants: 10-15% of the bill is standard.
Spas: 15-20% of the service is standard at most spas.
Taxis: Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped unless they perform some extra service such as carrying your bags or luggage to your hotel entrance, etc.
